How is alpaca fiber harvested?

Alpacas are generally shorn annually. The fiber is harvested and sorted into 6 grades of fiber. Grade 1 being the finest. All grades have uses. Alpaca fiber is 3 times warmer, and 7 times stronger than wool. Alpaca shearing is done with conventional sheep-shearing equipment or hand shears.
