Why are alpacas so popular?

Alpacas are the easiest to care for of all livestock. They use a communal dung pile, require hay / pasture, a multivitamin/mineral pellet and plenty of fresh water. They can be easily worked with and trained with proper handling.

The fiber industry in the US is just getting going. Fiber is being sorted and collected to produce beautiful, long lasting products.

Do alpacas spit?

Spitting is the alpaca way of saying "Bug Off", to let a male know his amorous attentions are not wanted, to ward off a perceived threat, or to establish pecking order while feeding. When approaching an alpaca, move slowly, avoid fast movements and speak gently. Alpacas are curious but take their time to approach you.

How is alpaca fiber harvested?

Alpacas are generally shorn annually. The fiber is harvested and sorted into 6 grades of fiber. Grade 1 being the finest. All grades have uses. Alpaca fiber is 3 times warmer, and 7 times stronger than wool. Alpaca shearing is done with conventional sheep-shearing equipment or hand shears.

How big are Alpacas?

They stand 32- 39 inches at the shoulder. At birth they weigh 10 - 23 pounds. An adult alpaca weighs 100 - 190 pounds.

How long do Alpaca's Live?

Alpacas generally live 15 to 20 years. This is with good care. Safe living conditions and companionship of other alpacas.
